BRIALLU
Our kennel name, Briallu..........
is taken from the Welsh word for "Primroses". My first Welsh Springer Spaniel, Kyna, was Ch. Shuk's Kyna Rose CD. Although I made the choice never to breed Kyna, I wanted her importance to carry on through all of our future dogs in some form of her name. In looking through my Welsh dictionary, I searched for all words having to do with the beautiful rose. BRIALLU seemed the perfect choice. Rose for Kyna, but using the plural form because of the many Welsh Springers and Tibetan Spaniels that would hopefully follow and honor the choice. I cannot fail to think of her as I name each new puppy that graces our lives!
The People of 'Briallu'
Barbara, Rich, Piper, and Ethan
It all began when Barbara Shuklis purchased her first Welsh Springer puppy in 1979. The wonderful Kyna, who Barb trained and showed, became Ch. Shuk's Kyna Rose CD. Kyna introduced Barb to a whole new world of dog shows, obedience trials, field work, and the fantastic community of WSS owners along with all of those entrusted with the love and devotion to purebred dogs.
In 1985 Rich Smith came along seeking a Welsh Springer Spaniel puppy. He ended up with a puppy from another breeder (there were no Briallu puppies available that year!) but he and Barbara married two years later, and he became immersed in the world of Welsh Springers.
Piper, and then Ethan, followed a few years later. Welsh Springers have always been an important part of their lives. They've never know a home not shared with these red & white spaniels. Don't you think Piper and Ethan would have learned to pick up their socks by now!
In 2008 we had the opportunity to add Tibetan Spaniels to our household. I had observed this wonderful breed for the prior ten years, and had known for quite some time that they were the "little dog" that I wanted to become part of our lives when the time was right.
Barb and Piper continue to hold up the exhibiting, training, and occasional breeding end of things here at Briallu, while Rich, Ethan, and our wonderful grandchildren stay behind the scenes, helping with the everyday love, care, socializing, and play. Everyone here contributes towards making our dogs such wonderful companions!
